Janice Valma Davey OAM Memorial Award 2024

Nominations are now open for the Janice Valma Davey OAM memorial award. This prestigious award aims to recognise and honour outstanding contributions of women to the brass band movement in Australia. Whether they are active players, non-playing members, or dedicated supporters, we seek to celebrate those individuals who have made a significant impact on their local band or the broader band movement.

We encourage you to nominate deserving individuals who have inspired others and contributed to the growth and success of their bands and communities.

Nominees should have demonstrated some, or all of the following:

• Exceptional dedication
• leadership
• commitment to advancing the brass band movement in Australia.

**Please note that all nominations must be received by midnight, Friday April 19th, 2024. The top 20 nominees who meet the criteria will receive a certificate of appreciation in recognition of their contribution to the brass band movement.

ABOUT THE JANICE VALMA DAVEY OAM MEMORIAL AWARD:

The Janice Valma Davey OAM Memorial Award aims to honour the legacy of Jan and recognise the exceptional women who continue to shape and elevate the Australian brass band community. The award will be presented annually to a nominated and deserving female who has demonstrated outstanding commitment and contribution to advancing the community and impact of brass bands in Australia.

The winning recipient will be presented with a trophy, engraved in their name and will be recognised on the perpetual shield. The trophy will be delivered to the recipient. The award will be presented via a ‘live’ online presentation.

ABOUT JANICE VALMA DAVEY OAM:

Born into a brass band family in Bendigo, Jan Davey (nee Peirce) was a third generation band member and a trailblazer for women in the brass band movement. She was the recipient of many national and state awards and was the first woman to achieve the title of Australian Champion Drum Major. She worked tirelessly as a committee member and supporter of her local Bendigo band and the broader brass band community at both state and national levels. She was posthumously awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in June 2022, and in September that same year, was inducted into the Victorian honour roll for women. Jan’s legacy to the brass band movement continues through two of her children, Alan and Karen Davey, her grandson, Broden Ford, and the many lives she impacted within the brass band movement and beyond.
