2023 Victorian State Band Championships – Adjudicator Announced
The Victorian Bands’ League is excited to announce the adjudicator for the 2023 Victorian State Band Championships is Maureen Cameron.
Maureen began her passion for music with the East Kilbride Borough Silver Band and Clydebank Borough Band. By a young age, she had won the Scottish and British National Championships with the CWS Glasgow Band and competed at the European Championships. Maureen pursued her music education at Salford College, under the tutelage of distinguished professors such as David King, Roy Newsome, and Elgar Howarth and was one of the last students to work with the legendary Harry Mortimer OBE before completing her studies.
She was a long-standing member of the world-famous Foden’s Band (England) and maintains active ties with the band. She has won most major Brass Band titles in Europe and Australia as either a player or conductor and her school ensembles have achieved considerable success in UK and Australia including performances at BBC Proms. She is currently Musical Director of ‘Women in Brass’ and is a playing member with the 2023, Champion Brass Band of Australia, Sydney City Brass.
Whilst recognised as an outstanding cornet player and musician, it is her dedication and fervour for educating young musicians and promoting community music that is truly inspiring. Following being awarded “BBC, Teacher of the Year, Secondary School”, Maureen moved to Australia to accept posts as the founding Head of Music at St Andrew’s Catholic College and Musical Director of Cairns Brass.
Maureen continues to be recognised for her commitment to music, more recently: Cairns Regional Council, International Women’s Day Scholarship 2018, Cairns Businesswomen Award (Finalist) Volunteer of the Year 2019, Cairns RSL International Women’s Day Award 2020, ACE-QLD Excellence in Education (finalist), Educational Leader Award 2022.
Maureen’s expertise as a conductor and adjudicator remains in high demand. She is an experienced adjudicator, having adjudicated at the Australian, Queensland, Tasmanian and New South Wales Band Championships. She values the challenge of balancing her professional career while being a devoted wife and mother.
